When one listens to music like this — the wild, loose, and thumping guitar riffs; the impossible beauty of it all — what kind of landscape comes to mind? Vast expanses large enough to get lost in. Deserts that stretch back to the beginning of time. Endless horizons that dissolve into pink bokehs. It’s Texas, isn't it? The band Glare, formed in 2017 in Texas's Rio Grande Valley, is less a genre traditionalist and more a painter of wide spaces and intense moods. The four-piece band has already earned a substantial following, both locally with their reputation for sold-out shows and online, a space where people shortcut emotions through their screens. Sunset Funeral, the band's debut LP, is a haze of dreamlike sorrow, where feelings replace language. It’s music, as guitarist Toni Ordaz puts it, "for people who don’t know how to articulate their feelings." The album Sunset Funeral documents unspeakable grief, detailing the process of mourning and its journey through our subconscious and our dreams. On first listen, Sunset Funeral — which sounds as expansive as desert sand — might overwhelm the senses. However, upon closer inspection, one discovers a multitude of finely crushed textures and treasures. "Guts," with its sweetly chugging guitar line, blurs the boundaries between bliss and despair. "2 Soon 2 Tell," one of the most romantic tracks on the album, is both tense and transcendent. "Nü Burn," a crisp and upbeat number, recalls the band's harder hardcore roots. Yet, even when they allow themselves to be heavy, one can hear a softening of Glare's sound compared to their earlier releases, along with an attempt to lean into more traditional pop song structures. The music soars heavenward, although it is still supported by a solid foundation. It is beautiful. It is lush. It is intoxicating.
